Chapter 3

The next morning when Jude asked for volunteers to check out the camp, almost everyone raised their hand. Luke and Ollie, however, didn’t. Maybe it was because they already knew Jude wouldn’t pick them.

Jude scanned the group and pointed at me, Dane, Nate, and Wyatt which didn’t surprise me. He talked to Ramone and then gestured at us to join him.

“You guys ready?” Jude asked.

We all nodded, and he tossed us each a snack bar. Before I even had the package open, he was waving us along. Jude climbed down the ladder, and one by one we followed him. Jude was wearing a backpack, but that is all we took with us.

It was a hot day in the jungle, and so humid the air actually felt wet. My hair stuck to the back of my neck and my clothing clung to my skin.

We walked through the jungle in a straight line, one right after the other. Jude led the way, and Dane brought up the rear. Nate, Wyatt and I were in the middle.

The jungle was quiet and still as if all the wildlife was too hot to bother making their usual noises. Except for the random buzzing insects which sounded like they were eager to complain about the heat.

We walked at a fast pace. Jude was doing his best to make sure no one approached us either from the front or from either side. He even kept looking up towards the sky as if he expected the planes to come zooming by to finish us off.

Nate tapped my shoulder. “Have you guys walked this way a lot?”

“No, well, at least I haven’t. This is only my second time going out this far,” I said.

“The island seems a lot bigger than I had imagined,” Nate said looking around.

I nodded. “It’s big. There’s a big mountain over on the other side.”

Nate looked over in the direction I indicated, but the trees blocked it from sight.

“Have you ever seen other people in the jungle?” Nate asked.

“No, just the protectors.”

“Animals?”

“Yeah, there are definitely some of those.”

Nate looked around as if he expected to see some of the wildlife. I hadn’t seen a lot, but I knew there was at least one large black cat. When I first arrived at the tree house, they’d told me there were wild boar in the area which I hadn’t seen for myself. I’d also heard other things making sounds, but I didn’t know what they were.

“Did they put them here?” Nate asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I don’t know,” I said with a shrug. “It’s possible.”

“They didn’t want us to go out at night, remember?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I remember.”

“Was that because of the animals?”

“I think it’s just something they said to scare us. To keep us in the camp. I’d been out at night, and there wasn’t anything scarier out there at night than there was during the day.”

Nate groaned and kicked at a stone on the ground. “I feel so stupid.”

“What? Why?”

“For falling for it.”

I shook my head and grabbed his arm.
